5 Days / 4 Nights — Kenya's Largest National Park Adventure

Your 5-Day Tsavo Adventure

Day 1

Nairobi to Tsavo East — Journey Begins

Your Tsavo adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel. We depart for Tsavo East National Park, a scenic 4-5 hour drive southeast towards Kenya's vast wilderness. Tsavo East is one of Africa's largest national parks, covering over 11,000 square kilometers of pristine savannah, riverine habitats, and diverse ecosystems. Upon arrival in the early afternoon, you'll settle into your lodge or camp and enjoy lunch. In the late afternoon, we embark on your first game drive in this magnificent landscape. Tsavo East is famous for its red elephants — these elephants appear reddish due to their habit of dusting themselves with red volcanic soil, which also provides protection from insects and the sun. You may spot these iconic animals, along with lions, zebra, giraffe, and numerous bird species. As the sun sets, you'll enjoy sundowners overlooking the vast Tsavo wilderness. Dinner at your accommodation concludes your first day in Kenya's largest national park.

Day 2

Full Day Tsavo East — Red Elephants & The Galana River

Today is dedicated entirely to exploring Tsavo East's remarkable wildlife and landscapes. You'll start with an early morning game drive before breakfast, when animals are most active in the cool hours. Your expert guide will search for Tsavo's famous red elephants, lions, leopards, and other Big Five members. The park's diverse habitats — from open plains to rocky outcrops — provide excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Mid-morning, you'll visit the Galana River, Tsavo's lifeline and one of East Africa's longest rivers. This crocodile-infested waterway is a wildlife gathering point, especially during dry seasons when animals congregate to drink. You'll observe massive crocodiles, hippos, and potentially water buffalo and other species at the river's edge. After a hearty brunch back at camp, you'll rest during the midday heat. The afternoon game drive explores different sections of the park, providing fresh wildlife encounters and photo opportunities. Tsavo's landscape is uniquely beautiful with volcanic formations, acacia woodlands, and vast open plains. Return to camp for dinner and an evening to relax under the African stars.

Day 3

Tsavo East to Tsavo West — Mzima Springs

This morning begins with a game drive through Tsavo East, giving you final opportunities to spot red elephants and other wildlife. By mid-morning, you'll return to camp for brunch, then we transfer to Tsavo West National Park (approximately 3-4 hours). The transfer route itself offers wildlife viewing opportunities as you traverse this vast ecosystem. Upon arrival at your Tsavo West accommodation, you'll settle in and enjoy an early afternoon rest. In the late afternoon, we take our first game drive in Tsavo West, beginning at the famous Mzima Springs. These crystal-clear freshwater springs are one of Africa's natural wonders, discharging over 50 million liters of water daily. You'll visit the underwater observation chamber where you can view hippos, fish, and other aquatic life in their natural habitat — a unique and unforgettable experience. Tsavo West's landscape differs from Tsavo East with more rocky terrain, volcanic features, and varied vegetation. Return to camp in the evening for dinner and relaxation.

Day 4

Full Day Tsavo West — Shetani Lava Flow & Rhino Sanctuary

Your full day in Tsavo West showcases this park's incredible geological features and wildlife. We begin with an early morning game drive, searching for lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalo, and elephants. Tsavo West is particularly known for its rhino sanctuary and successful rhino conservation efforts. If fortunate, you may spot these endangered animals in their protected habitat. Mid-morning, we visit the Shetani Lava Flow, a striking geological formation created centuries ago by volcanic eruptions. The stark black lava fields extend across the landscape, creating an otherworldly scenery that is unique in Kenya. This dramatic terrain is home to adapted wildlife species. After a hearty brunch back at camp, you'll rest during the heat of the day. The afternoon game drive explores additional areas of Tsavo West, including Chyulu Hills with its stunning vistas and diverse wildlife. Tsavo West's combination of geological wonders, successful conservation efforts, and abundant wildlife makes it a highlight of any Tsavo safari. Return to camp for dinner and an evening under the stars.

Day 5

Sunrise Game Drive & Departure

Your final morning in Tsavo begins before dawn with a sunrise game drive through Tsavo West. This is often the best time for wildlife viewing as animals are active in the cool morning hours. You'll have one last opportunity to spot your favorite animals and capture spectacular photographs with golden sunrise light illuminating the volcanic landscapes. By mid-morning, you'll return to camp for brunch, where you can reflect on your incredible Tsavo experiences and review your wildlife photos. After brunch, we begin your return journey to Nairobi, arriving at your hotel in the late afternoon. If you're interested in beach extensions, we can arrange transportation to Kenya's coastal areas (Mombasa, Malindi) instead of returning to Nairobi. Our team will assist with any extension arrangements or future safari bookings you may wish to make. Your Tsavo experience will remain a highlight of your African adventure.

Common Questions

Is Tsavo really home to red elephants?

Yes. Tsavo's elephants famously dust themselves in the park's distinctive red volcanic soil, giving them a ruddy appearance found nowhere else. It's a signature sight of a Tsavo safari.

How big is Tsavo National Park?

Tsavo is Kenya's largest national park, split into Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Combined, the two cover over 22,000 square kilometres — about 4% of Kenya's total land area.

What's the difference between Tsavo East and Tsavo West?

Tsavo East is flatter, drier and known for huge elephant herds and big cats on open plains. Tsavo West is more dramatic and volcanic, with Mzima Springs, lava flows and the famous black rhino sanctuary at Ngulia.

How many days do I need in Tsavo?

Three to four nights is ideal if you want to see both Tsavo East and Tsavo West properly. A shorter stay of two nights works well for first-time visitors combining Tsavo with a coastal extension.

Can Tsavo be combined with the Kenyan coast?

Absolutely — Tsavo's proximity to Mombasa and Diani makes it one of Kenya's best 'safari and beach' combinations. We can include a short Tsavo leg at the start or end of a coast holiday.
