Laikipia & Ol Pejeta

4 Days / 3 Nights — Conservation & Exclusive Wilderness

Your 4-Day Laikipia Adventure

Day 1

Nairobi to Laikipia Plateau — The High Country

Your Laikipia adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel. We drive north to Laikipia Plateau, a scenic 3-4 hour journey through changing landscapes and elevation. Laikipia is Kenya's most exclusive region, featuring numerous private conservancies dedicated to wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism. Upon arrival in the early afternoon, you'll settle into your lodge or camp and enjoy lunch. This afternoon, we embark on your first game drive in this pristine landscape. The Laikipia Plateau, at over 2,000 meters elevation, offers cooler climate, stunning vistas, and unique wildlife viewing opportunities. You may encounter reticulated giraffes, zebra, antelope, and with luck, leopards and lions. The afternoon light provides excellent photography opportunities against the backdrop of the Great Rift Valley below. As the sun sets, you'll enjoy sundowners overlooking the expansive plateau. Dinner at your accommodation concludes your first day in Kenya's most exclusive safari destination.

Day 2

Ol Pejeta Conservancy — Endangered Species & Conservation

Today is dedicated to exploring Ol Pejeta Conservancy, one of East Africa's leading private conservancies focused on endangered species conservation. We begin with an early morning game drive within Ol Pejeta, searching for its abundant wildlife. Ol Pejeta is world-renowned as the home of the last northern white rhinos on Earth — these critically endangered animals are protected by armed guards. Your guide will explain conservation efforts to save this species from extinction. The conservancy also operates a chimpanzee sanctuary, a rescue center for orphaned and traumatized chimpanzees rehabilitated from illegal captivity. You'll visit the sanctuary and learn about these remarkable primates and rehabilitation efforts. Mid-morning, you'll return to camp for brunch and rest during the heat. The afternoon game drive continues within Ol Pejeta and adjacent areas, exploring different habitats and searching for the Big Five and other species. Ol Pejeta's conservation model combines wildlife protection with community benefit, making it an exemplary African conservancy. Return to camp for dinner and evening activities.

Day 3

Walking Safari & Community Conservancies

This morning we experience a walking safari in Laikipia, one of the region's defining activities. Walking safaris offer intimate wildlife encounters and ecological insights impossible in vehicles. Your expert guide, often armed, will lead you through varied habitats while explaining animal behavior, vegetation, and conservation challenges. You'll encounter wildlife tracks, observe birds and smaller animals up close, and experience the landscape from ground level. Walking safaris create profound connections with the African wilderness. The afternoon is dedicated to visiting either Solio Ranch or Lewa Conservancy, both exemplary community-based conservation initiatives. Solio Ranch specializes in endangered rhino protection and has successfully reintroduced rhinos to Kenya. Lewa Conservancy combines wildlife conservation with community development and has achieved remarkable conservation results. Your visit includes game drives and learning about these conservancies' innovative approaches to balancing wildlife protection with community needs. Return to camp for dinner and reflection on your incredible experiences.

Day 4

Final Activities & Return to Nairobi

Your final morning in Laikipia begins with a game drive through the plateau, giving you one last opportunity to spot wildlife and enjoy the stunning landscape. You may encounter reticulated giraffes, zebra, antelope, warthogs, and potentially predators like leopards or wild dogs. By mid-morning, you'll return to camp for brunch, where you can reflect on your extraordinary Laikipia experience. The region's focus on conservation, exclusive lodges, walking safaris, and encounters with endangered species create a unique and deeply meaningful safari experience. After brunch, we begin the drive back to Nairobi, arriving at your hotel in the late afternoon. Your guide will share insights about Laikipia's conservation initiatives and sustainable tourism model during the journey. You'll have time to rest or prepare for your onward travel. Our team will assist with any extension arrangements or future safari bookings, including visits to other Kenyan regions or Tanzania.

Common Questions

What makes Laikipia special?

Laikipia is a patchwork of private conservancies rather than a national park, which means low vehicle density, walking safaris, night drives, horseback game drives and exclusive access to wildlife you won't see elsewhere — including the last two northern white rhinos at Ol Pejeta.

Can I see rhinos in Laikipia?

Yes — Laikipia is one of the best places in the world to see both black and white rhinos. Ol Pejeta Conservancy alone protects over 150 rhinos, including the last two remaining northern white rhinos on Earth.

Is Laikipia good for families?

Laikipia is outstanding for families. The relaxed conservancy rules allow walking safaris, horseback riding, mountain biking, chimpanzee visits and night drives — activities that keep children engaged beyond traditional vehicle-based game drives.

Is Laikipia expensive?

Laikipia lodges tend to be more exclusive than mainstream park lodges and prices reflect the smaller number of guests and private-conservancy access. In return you get a much more intimate experience with the wildlife.

When is the best time to visit Laikipia?

Laikipia is a year-round destination thanks to its higher altitude and reliable water sources. June to October is driest, but the green seasons (March-May and November) are gorgeous and much quieter.
