5 Days / 4 Nights — Kenya's Premier Wildlife Destination
Your safari begins with an early morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel. We depart for the Masai Mara, a 5-6 hour scenic drive through Kenya's dramatic Great Rift Valley. Along the way, we stop at a panoramic viewpoint to stretch your legs and take in the vast escarpment vistas. After lunch at a designated stop, we continue to the Mara, arriving at your lodge or camp in the late afternoon. Your first game drive happens as the sun begins to set — the perfect introduction to the Mara's wildlife as animals emerge during the cooler hours. You'll enjoy sundowners (a traditional African sunset drink) overlooking the savannah before dinner at your accommodation.
This is a full day dedicated to exploring the Mara's incredible wildlife. You'll start with an early morning game drive before breakfast, when predators are most active and animals are foraging. Your experienced guide will search for lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, and elephants — the legendary Big Five. Along the way, you'll discover hippo pools where these massive herbivores cool themselves in the water, crocodile-infested rivers, and vast herds of wildebeest and zebra. After a hearty mid-morning brunch back at camp, you'll rest during the heat of the day. In the afternoon, another game drive takes you to different areas of the reserve, offering fresh wildlife viewing and photography opportunities. Many visitors spot their first leopard or the elusive African painted dog during these afternoon drives. You'll return to camp for dinner and an evening at your leisure to relax, review your photos, or enjoy the sounds of the African bush.
Today, we venture into the exclusive Mara Triangle, the most remote and pristine section of the reserve. This area is home to some of the Mara's largest lion prides and is particularly spectacular during the Great Migration (July-October) when you may witness the dramatic river crossings as wildebeest and zebra brave crocodile-infested waters. If timing is right, this moment — one of nature's greatest spectacles — is both thrilling and humbling. Throughout the day, your guide will navigate the varied habitats seeking wildlife. In the late afternoon, we visit a nearby Maasai warrior village where you'll meet the traditional inhabitants of this land. You'll learn about their pastoral culture, traditions, and relationship with the wildlife that shares their ancestral lands. This cultural encounter provides a deeper understanding of Kenya beyond the animals. The visit concludes with a sundowner back on the savannah before returning to camp.
For guests who choose the optional hot air balloon experience, you'll wake before dawn for an unforgettable adventure. You'll be driven to the launch site where skilled pilots prepare the balloon. As the sun rises over the Mara, you'll drift peacefully over the savannah, watching the landscape awaken and spotting herds of animals from a unique vantage point. The one-hour flight is a truly magical experience — silent, serene, and breathtaking. After landing, you'll enjoy a champagne breakfast in the bush, complete with fresh pastries and tropical fruits, a quintessential African safari experience. For non-balloon guests, a early morning game drive is arranged instead. After breakfast at camp (or your champagne breakfast), you'll have time to rest and relax. In the afternoon, a final game drive explores areas not yet visited, giving you additional chances to see specific animals you may have missed or to spend more time photographing your favourite wildlife moments. As the light turns golden, you'll witness the Mara at its most beautiful — perfect for photography and reflection on your incredible days.
Your final morning begins with one last game drive, giving you the opportunity to spot any remaining animals on your wish list and to savour your final moments in the Mara. By mid-morning, you'll return to camp for brunch, where you can reflect on your safari memories and enjoy a final meal surrounded by the sounds of the bush. After brunch, we begin the drive back to Nairobi, arriving at your hotel in the late afternoon. Your guide will share insights about the region during the journey, and you can review your wildlife photos and safari highlights. You'll have plenty of time before evening for rest or to prepare for your onward travel. If you're extending your trip, we can arrange additional activities in Nairobi or customize a follow-up safari to another region.
The Masai Mara offers excellent wildlife viewing year-round, but July to October is the prime window for the Great Migration and Mara River crossings. January-February is another dry-season peak with newborn animals and quieter camps.
A minimum of three nights is recommended to give you enough game drives to see the Big Five and cover the different sections of the reserve. Five to seven nights is ideal for Migration chasers or first-time visitors who want time to also experience a Maasai cultural visit or balloon flight.
Yes. The Masai Mara is one of the few reserves in East Africa where all members of the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino — are regularly seen. Black rhino sightings are rarer and typically in the reserve's western sections.
For migration season (July–October) we recommend booking 9–12 months ahead, as the best camps sell out. For other months, 4–6 months' lead time is usually comfortable.
The main Masai Mara National Reserve allows more vehicles and only permits game drives during daylight hours. Private conservancies (Mara North, Naboisho, Olare Motorogi and others) have stricter vehicle limits, permit night drives and walking safaris, and offer a more exclusive experience for a higher price point.
Absolutely — a dawn balloon flight over the Mara is one of Africa's most memorable experiences, drifting silently over herds of wildebeest, zebra and elephants with a champagne breakfast on landing. It's a popular add-on and we can arrange it as part of your itinerary.
